An Story of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured I would book lodging when I arrived, yet once I got there, a major event was taking place and all the budget hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could bed down in the airport – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open 24 hours. Not knowing how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting in the direction of the casino, believing I could pass the night in an establishment that was open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for acing a crucial interview the next morning, yet, as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.

We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared confused because a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired whether I needed help. I explained my situation and right away she offered I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, given that my my interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided a meal: one stuffed baguettes she brought back her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.

With hindsight, I can appreciate the significant risk she took as a woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I existed within my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

I never did go to that university, and I never saw her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has repaid her generosity many times over. Our society requires more people like that woman.
