In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
